Xcom/ dishonoUred

As much as we hate to admit it, we don't all play MMO's 24/7...

Xcom/ dishonoUred

Anyone pick these up? Xcom seems like a solid chance of scratching that strategy itch that has gone neglected for a long while.

My only other XCOM experience was Terror from the Deep (which was awesome).

Likely just talking to myself here but OMG the difficulty jump from normal to "classic" mode is large. They really needed one more step up as normal is quite easy unless you royally screw up. Classic mode is a lesson in alien anal probing.

If anyone here completes classic on ironman mode , hats off to ya.

One of my mates got Dishonoured, and is having a lot of fun playing it. He did say that the intro story was pretty weak, but I don't think that matters a great deal as long as the game itself is fun. He also said in one particular situation the AI was pretty shit, but it might be alright for the rest of the game. I definitely want to play it, after I get bored of WoW again, and actually finish Borderlands 2 :D

You sir are a LOT better than me. Classic has been kicking my butt with rookies that couldnt hit a barn wall at 50 paces.

Yes the bulk of my casualties were in the first few missions,

Once you get ya squad sight sniper and some extra couple hit points on ya front line troops, you manage to send them to the med bay rather than the graveyard.

Me too. Classic looks tough.

Dishonored (sic) is a great stealth game. Reminded me of Thief games, only with cooler magic powers.

was looking for something to play and happened across this thread.

have played xcom since release and love it, still play it now and then after a couple years gone by.
have beaten it on impossible difficulty (but not ironman).

for harder difficulties:

preferred squad:
2 snipers, squad sight
2 support (medic, fast run)
2 support (cover fire)

game setting:
not created equally (random stats: restart till you have 3+ with reasonable accuracy(60+))
finish the first mission with your 3 surviving, or restart.
then play as normal, spend lots on recruiting, and sack everyone with crap stats, and only use non sniper/support if everyone is in hospital
only need to tech weapons for sniper and rifle(a little pistol for early game till snips have squad sight)
use grenades at start, loss of income is better than dead.
use cover, always.

all support carries med packs, use them
everyone carries a scope, accuracy is paramount.
designated runner = suicide scout, carry a vest/armour upgrade. single move forward, others shoot/cover, then runner moves back.
creep forward slowly, take your time
use cover, always!!

the expansion is really cool, too.
think i'll go play it again now :)

Been trying the Long war mod for XCOM

Certainly bit different, though haven't made it too far through. But looking fun so far, I feel like I'm about to get slammed big time in my current game.

- Seems to remove the always Crit from enemy, can trade fire with the aliens more. Rather than high casualtry rate till you get strong armour to survive.
- Recovery time is increase, had a roster of over 30 soldiers and still ended up with one mission where all I had left was 4 rookies.
- No Satelite spam to win :(, Early interceptors can rarely shoot down UFOs, couldn't work out why I had so many.

But yes, Squad sight on snipers,

always crit from enemy ?
cover removes that, use cover.. always :)

i'll look for the mod, sounds interesting.

atm I'm playing on classic with DLC's (enemy within/progeny/slingshot), going for the "army of 4" unlock (don't upgrade squad size achievement)
just got the carapace armour tech, so I can stop sending suicide rookies and actually level the good ones :)

Edit: downloaded long war, gunna take it for a spin now
