Help please: time for the Bigman to get a new PC

Hello boys,

It is my birthday tomorrow and my wife agreed for me to get a new PC (for birthday + Xmas ... she is tough to do business with ...).

I would love your help to chose the right rig.

In the past, I have always bought separate parts and then asked someone nice to assemble them. This time, I am thinking I might buy an already made computer from a big brand. What do you guys think?

My current machine is dying of a slow and painful death and I want a nice new machine to play TOR. I would like to spend a $1,000ish.

I checked out Secro's thread about his machine, should I get a similar config? How much was it? http://www.southerncrossguild.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=20400

Thanks for helping the BIGMAN !!!

I bought my current machine with your help and the help of Miku in March 2006 http://www.southerncrossguild.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=4821&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=45 :

Case - ThermalTake Shark
Motherboard - Asus A8N-E
Processor - AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4200+ Dual-Core
Memory - Kingston 2GB 400MHz DDR Non-ECC CL3 (3-3-3) DIMM (Kit of 2)
Graphics Card - Asus GeForce EN7800GT/2DHTV
Sound Card - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4
Hard Drive - Seagate 250GB SATA II ST3250824AS
Optical Drive - Pioneer DVR-111D (Black)
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ (2 CPUs), 2.2GHz
RAM 2GB
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT 1GB
SB Audigy 4 WDM

In May 2008, thanks to your help , I bought a new videocard http://www.southerncrossguild.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=15199
GeForce 9600GT Gigabyte

I would like to keep my monitor, if possible, which is a new LG 23" (LG E2350).

Time for an upgrade baby !!!!!

Naw don't copy mine. The CPU socket is already out dated and not used, and the GPU is old now.

"Big Brand" computers pretty much suck for gaming bigman. I wouldn't go near one.

Here is something I just spec'd up Bigman. Made an couple of assumptions, 1) your power supply, optical drive, keyboard, mouse and case can be reused from your old rig, and 2) you have an operating system to put on it.

[*] ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 Motherboard $135
[*] Intel Core i5 2500K $229
[*] Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) Vengeance DDR3 $69
[*] Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST31000524AS $119
[*] Corsair Force Series 3 120GB SSD $199
[*] Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB Golden Sample $249
= $1000

Add power supply Corsair GS-600 +$105

You could save a little by dropping the SSD but I wouldn't recommend it, or by getting a ASUS Radeon HD 6850 DirectCU V2 for $169 which should have no trouble with the 23" screen res. (new psu, drop the GTX 560 TI and swap it for the Radeon HD 6850 would be $1025)

Hope that helps.

If you get the gainward make sure your re-seller has decent return policy, cause gainward are the worst support ever.

I like this PC . Its what I bought (almost). SSD's are sexy AND IM NEVER GOING BACK!!!! but they dont help your games THAT much.

Biggest issue is their capacity- as its your main C:\ that runs on it, unless you point your my docs /music / downloads etc to another physical drive, it will fill up VERY FAST.

I want to install TOR on my 64GB SSD, but since its a 27GB client, I cant find enough spare space on my SSD to fit it QQ

Thank you so much guys for your advice. Wastey, thanks for taking the time to research a good spec. If you guys are happy with it, I will go get it, I don't know much about computers and I trust you guys.

Wastey, a couple of questions:

1) can you please assume that your 1st assumption is wrong and tell me what case I need to buy. I will get the power supply you mentioned. What is an optical drive? I will not keep anything from previous PC. I find that they get full of dust inside. Not sure how to stop it. It is hard to clean.

2) I live in Pymble - Sydney, where can I buy that stuff for the prices your mentioned? Would they put it together for me?

The shinobi case is awesome for the price. I should know, I bought it and Atomic gave it good reviews. of course you then have to buy a PSU.

Optical drive is your CD drive. $40 or is it even less these days? :)

There isn't a whole lot you can do about dust.

Sydney is full of great places to buy. Maybe not the North Shore itself but theres bound to be plenty of places within a reasonable drive. Ahh I miss Sydney CBD, stip clubs and yum cha computer stores right next to each other.

If you get some positive air pressure going in your case and some filters dust will stay out. ^^

Inside my case almost looks new. You need to clean the filters pretty regular though :(

lol kash ><

I think it's mainly the pressure that does it, cause my last PC had filters but it was dusty as hell anyway.

This one is all sparkly ^_^
