Home Internet speed

I think this might be worthy of bragging.

I've replaced my new cable modem with a netgear CGD24N.

Peak speed - 33.77MiBit/sec!!!! (Mi=1024*1024)

This was achieved doing multiple downloads of linux ISOs off aarnet mirror.

Measured via byte counters on my firewall:

Code: Select all

# for i in `seq 1 1 10`; do date ; ifconfig eth1|grep RX\ bytes; sleep 10; done
Tue Sep 28 00:10:29 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10180780728 (9.4 GiB)  TX bytes:185097641 (176.5 MiB)
Tue Sep 28 00:10:39 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10224898496 (9.5 GiB)  TX bytes:185891260 (177.2 MiB)
Tue Sep 28 00:10:49 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10268547193 (9.5 GiB)  TX bytes:186675394 (178.0 MiB)
Tue Sep 28 00:10:59 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10312314715 (9.6 GiB)  TX bytes:187464554 (178.7 MiB)
Tue Sep 28 00:11:09 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10356402141 (9.6 GiB)  TX bytes:188258414 (179.5 MiB)
Tue Sep 28 00:11:19 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10400668777 (9.6 GiB)  TX bytes:189057470 (180.2 MiB)
Tue Sep 28 00:11:29 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10443421276 (9.7 GiB)  TX bytes:189828366 (181.0 MiB)
Tue Sep 28 00:11:39 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10486903370 (9.7 GiB)  TX bytes:190612324 (181.7 MiB)
Tue Sep 28 00:11:49 EST 2010
          RX bytes:10525685104 (9.8 GiB)  TX bytes:191297533 (182.4 MiB)

          RX bytes:10561725682 (9.8 GiB)  TX bytes:191884539 (182.9 MiB)

Peak was between 11:09 and 11:19.

Exceptional,

What carrier/plan are you on? I'm going to guess foxtel installations aren't common in your area, AFAIK cable speed is dependant on how crowded the lines are?

Telstra Cable. 50GB Elite I think they call it these days. Reading around, I get the impression cable 'syncs' to 34Mbit/sec to the exchange.

Look at times tested :)

I did the test at midnight to avoid the very congestion you mention.

Doing the test at say 4pm yielded very different results.

I take it - you mean 1.5Mbytes per sec?

How are you measuring that? I found www.ozspeedtest.com maxed out at 8Mbits/sec for me, even though I can go way above that on other sites. www.speedtest.net with Brisbane server maxed out at 20Mbits/sec, but Sydney servers were higher.

Also I couldn't get high download rates for a single connection to anywhere. Even aarnet mirror. I had to have multiple downloads running to max the connection.

What's your setup, network-wise? How are you connected to your cable modem? What cable modem is it?

I originally had my PC connected to the Motorolla cable modem via USB. I discovered it only communicated at USB1.1 speeds (i.e. 12Mbits/sec). Which kinda matches your 1.5Mbytes/sec speed.

Only to select places in Melbourne.

Once the the $11B deal with NBN was signed - Telstra announced they are no longer pursuing the trial.

All the ISPs have pretty much stopped rolling out infrastructure at hte moment due to the uncertainties of the NBN.

:)

As one famous IBM tech said - "the speed of light is too slow".

Bring on quantum tunneling.
