if the power supply did overheat should I replace immediately?

if ur machine still works you probably popped a couple of power reg capacitors, nothing too serious, it happened to my old media box and it still worked.

If u know the smoke came from the psu just replace it, if ur not sure check out the caps on ur mobo/gfx etc and see if one has split or is bulging.

Does the inside of the powersupply smell of burnt plastic? I'd think you're in line for a new powersupply very shortly, on the bright side they're not overly expensive at the moment I think you can get a half decent one with 12V rails for only a bit over $100.

Antec have a relatively new psu on the market a 650w for about $130 is semi-modular and got great reviews. I got one for a new PC project, supports SLI and crossfire very stable rails.
