I've just started playing Eve online. So far i'm going into mining, and imagine i will continue pretty far down that route and then cross into manufacturing.
Does anyone have any helpful hints for this? Thanks!

donts start as miner, never.
Start with a good crusier, upgrade your weapon skills abit so you can handle DED 4/10 (4-5mil ISK per hour)
Once you got that, learn this:
Astrology 4/5
Mining 4/5
Drones 5/5
Scout Drones Operation 3/5
Combat Drones 3/5
Mining Barges 3/5
Trading (2/5)
*Mine either Scordites or Kernites, pyrolexes as last resort*
Work on exhumers (sp)
With the specialised mining ships, you hardly needs to haul your minings. They best miner ship have 8k cargo to start with.

Gerbil,
If you wanna make the big mining biccies you've gotta ditch empire and gety into low sec space. My advice is join a player corporation.
There are plenty of good ones, I was in Eve Defence Force, another good one with plenty of Aussies was VTIL. Playing by yourself is OK to get hold of the basics, but I think you could potentially get bored pretty quick unless you're part of a corp.
As a generalist, at the peak of my mining I could pull about 10mill isk/hr arkonor or bistot with a barge. Mining gurus in the corp with multiple accounts could easily pull two or three times that per account. One guy was making 500mill a day with an exhumer fleet. I was making up to 20 mill/hr ratting with a BS, but farming belts got a bit lonely at times.

Ok, i've given up mining for the moment, just doing missions for the moment. Me and a few mates have started our own little corp, so i'll be sticking with that for the moment.
If anyone wants to look me up in game, i'm called Gerbilius (really, who would steal Gerbil?)
