So, might be a silly question.

In previous games, your stats incremented by which skills you leveled, and if you leveled skills you could gimp you stats.

Was there a negative to improving skills, I couldn't see as such from my limited time. stats you incremented manually.

From what I saw skills have no effect on base stats which is a good thing. Was stupid in games where you had to do a bunch of woodchopping or something to improve your HP.

In other news I got my beta invite email

And my forum beta forum account is working, just had the password wrong

Usambara:
from what I saw, skills had no affect on levelling.
levelling affected skills, eg: I gained ranks in syphon occasionally, even though I didn't use that skill during that level.
It seemed to randomly apply skill levels to skills equipped in the hot bar or gear worn when gaining a level.

I did a brief experiment and found there was no correlation to the weapon or powers used, but too brief to be sure of anything. (was low level and brief one level up. need a lot more experimentation to gain any usefull information on this)

grinding crafting professions did nothing to increase my character level or xp.
I did not notice any reduction in skill-point allocation when levelling after a lot of craft grinding either.

summary: no visible detriment to levelling skills, so far.

So I ended up being a sheep and ordering this.

What alliance are SC thinking of?
Secro, where are TKG thinking of going?

Been looking around trying to get a grasp on what to do, all this articles around like this:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12 ... verything/
Implies you can be everything, is this everything at once, is it like The Secret World where you can eventually slot in all skills or do I still have to be careful on where I put skill points.

Fortunately I found an article which, unlike most other which are a rehash of marketing, seems a good get up to speed overview I was after.

If by stats you mean your HP, MAGICKA and STAMINA stats then no, your skills wont impact/gimp your stats. However I did encounter diminishing returns and soft caps on stats like armor and so on. At lvl 17 I soft capped my armor rating, however after an increase in my heavy armor skill and an added point in HP the soft cap disappeared.

I hit the armour soft cap at about level 8?
was wearing home made level appropriate heavy armour
had every stat point in hit points.
was an orc dragonnight with only the tank tree with points in it.
think I had about 350 armour

experimental crafter build, most of my skill points were in crafting

there is a limited amount of skill points, so you can customise, but not do everything at the same time.
some care is needed in skill point placement at lower levels.

your hot bar only holds 5 active skills and 1 ultimate skill.
you get another hot bar at level 15, but only 1 hot bar active at a time.

so no gain from investing in more than 5 active skills and 1 ultimate skill below 15
and after 15, sort of have 2 hot bars set for say.. pvp / pve, or solo / group etc
therefore, no point having more than 2 ultimate skills: waste of skill points.
likewise more than 10 active skills.

also, a lot of passive skills require active skills of the same skill line be in the hotbar for maximum affect.

eg: passive 2handed weapon skills do nothing while you have a sword/shield combo equipped.
but you might have a dps build hotbar, and a tank hotbar setup, after L15

summary: yes, be careful where you put the points :)

I was watching some Q&A by some beta tester on Twitch.. @Kodiak or something.

Had a Veteran Rank 10 chappy running about and as he is talking in stream answer question he was allocating some skill point to answer this and that, he had 641 unsused skill points.

Did the beta guys get an above normal quota to play with, or is what you might end up with. the Few skill calculators I've seen seem to max out at 100.

600 + skill points woah!
Im not sure if theres a cap or not on skill points, but either way you would end up with more than 100 for sure once you are max lvl. You aquire sp's from shards, from lvling and from questing, not to mention repeatable quests like those from the pvp zone which will also give you sp's
