Beta Experiences - only about 1 hour last night

Post by Mick » 07 Oct 2011, 10:40

So i got home and my kids had turned off the power board to my computer!!!! when i turned it back on and launched SW:TOR, it had 6GB of English Assets to download.

!!!

So i eventually got it all sorted by about 11pm last night so logged in for a look over. Heres a few points:

* When you start SW:TOR, my screen got resized to 1024*768 and it looked like there were 2 version of the application opened. It was "stuck" on the splash screen for a good 5 minutes i rekon. It eventually got into the game. So if you get this same situation, just sit it out

* Character creation is pretty cool - there are enough options to make yourself truely unique. Its not "City of Heroes" level but theres enough variety

* The cinematic cut scenes are pretty cool. I'm actually interested in looking at all the character combinations because they have definatly put work into the character story.

* Everything is voice acted - its amazing how much of a difference this makes. It makes me feel like i'm playing "Oblivion" so i'm actually sitting through the quest text as it doesnt feel like "quest text" and its more of a story. Even your own character responses are voice acted.

* The quest dialog is like a Mass Effect conversation so its actually interactive - i really liked this and it kept me interested in what was being said.

* Everyone has an OOC heal ability with no cooldown so theres minimal downtime - i only had to use it once as typically i wasnt taking uch damage early on.

* Combat was ok - very similar to every other MMO - it did feel "cool" fighting other lightsabre wielding characters over general trash mobs

* Good Map System - easy to see where you need to go

* I like the visual display that happens when you do something Dark/Light side

* The "Level Up" animation/experience is pretty crap - i didnt realise i leveled up when i did. I think its because i'm used to some grand level up experience in Wow where some big sound plays and half your screen is taken up by a beam of light from the heavens.

The best part was the quest dialog though - i'm someone who just clicks "next" and then checks the map for where i need to go for a quest but in this game, i actually wanted to listen to what was being said. I've only seen the early content though and you would expect them to put alot of effort into the intial experience but its really promising.

I'll be playing it over the weekend to give it a good bashing. My character name is "Mick" on the PvP server - Sith side and going for the "dark side".

There was one quest where i got to torture someone for information - that was good fun.

Revan Server hey...
Same server as my Jedi Knight.

I may have to create a Sith Lord to come join you.
No point being a guild if we don't all join in the same area.

Scratches head.

Are you both in the full beta or something? Or did you copy this from the forums?

Because the weekend beta that is on this weekend doesn't start until Saturday 9am (Aus time -Melb)

Ahh that explains it. I'm in the weekend only one (and was in the original Squad 1020 weekend on a month ago), not the full time beta.

Our one starts on Saturday morning :)

Link to a stream would be good - interested to see what version you guys run compared to ours :)

This was one questions

Do they let the Regular beta's play with the Weekend Beta's? In one post they were indicating that maybe they had separate servers setup for the weekender's

Nope I believe we are seperated - Weekenders are more of a stress test, the regular testers are the ones actually finding the primary bugs.

Weekenders can only see 1 server to log into, but from posts above it seems the regular testers get a choice.

Which I can also see.

The story for each class is AWESOME!!

The only issue is its making be role EVERY character just to play out the story.

I'm someone who will watch bad movies or play games if i get "sucked in" to the story and playing this MMO really is like playing an Elder Scrolls game or some other single player game which is all story focussed.

I'm really looking forward to this game to actually come out.
